New post in: Next time someone complains about not really owning their e-books

While in a different discussion I suddenly realized in spite of all the whining about how restrictive digital book licenses are compared to DTB the digital book license is actually a much better deal and much more open in many respects.

Here is my reasoning:

DTB license:

Includes 1 license to copyrighted material
Must be read on the exact device it was purchased on (very tightly linked not only to a type of device but to a particular instance of that device)

License is saleable or lendable (you can sell or lend your book)

License is only as perpetual as the device which may degrade over time (ie if the book gets lost or falls apart and you want to read it again you have to buy another copy – thus I have favorite books I have purchased many times)

If you want to read it in a different format (paperback when you own a hardcover) you must buy another copy

Compare this to a Kindle license:

You cannot sell or lend it but…
License is not limited to one device – you can share the book on up to 5 Kindles

License is not limited to one type of device – you can read on a Kindle and iPhone and PC/Laptop/or Netbook or…. whatever

If you lose drop or upgrade the e-reader, laptop, PC or whatever your license continues and you still have access to the content on whatever you replace it with. Your license is perpetual it goes on forever.

So actually except from the perspective of selling or lending your old books the Kindle license is a better deal at least for me who doesn’t resell or lend books anyway.

It means I should never have to buy a 2nd digital copy of a book and I have bought multiple copies of many DTB.

Just a thought….

Evelyn, www.feedbooks.com, www.manybooks.net, www.smashwords.com, www.newfreebooks.com (this one takes some converting of pdfs, so unless your good with that you might not wanna try that site out for a while) im probably forgetting some sites, but amazon releases some free books once a month, you can type in the search bar -domain to look for kindle books, and then sort them from low to high price and find all kinds of free books. and there are also some on the big deals on kindle page. kindle best sellers also has them free.

New post in: B %26 N Nook…

I think my reading comprehension skills are pretty good and I think I can hold my own in a "big boy" conversation.

My question to Xbox LuvR would be: what are you getting out of all of this?

You came to a Kindle discussion forum to announce your love and affection for a product that has nothing to do with the nature of this forum. (This is the point that makes me think that if there is anyone with a comprehension deficit….it might be you).

You’ve made snarky comments as if you’ve outsmarted the rest of us.

You’ve been congratulated on your purchase and wished the best of luck.

Again…I ask, what are you getting out of this (other than having your desperate need for attention met)?

I hope you have years of reading enjoyment and that you are as happy with your decision as I am with my Kindle.

I also hope you find happiness and someone to give you the attention you so desperately crave.

It just goes to show that you can include all the glitz and flash you wish, and that will certainly allow you to "compare" via checkmarks against another products’ features. But if you get the core functionality wrong? Well all the feature comparisons in the world mean diddly squat if you can’t even read a damn book.

New post in: B %26 N Nook…

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009
3 replies to the following post by Susan Lynn Umpleby.

Reginald Kenneth Dwight is that *you*?!? If so, welcome back–but remember, we know why you’re posting here. Don’t we everyone?

All together now…

He has a Nook but:

He can’t register it. Or…

He can’t download his books. Or…

He can download his books, but they can’t be opened. Or…

He can open his books, but the pages are blank. Or…

His books show the text, but several pages are missing. Or…

No pages are missing, but when he tries to go to the next page his Nook skips forward more than one page. Or…

He bought a book, but since he got the sample first the actual book can’t be seen. Or…

The edges of his nook are sharp & he has to round them with sandpaper. Or…

He has to keep taking the battery out and "reseating it" for his Nook to work. Or…

He discovered the hard way that deleting his books instead of "archiving" them meant he had to rebuy the book again. Or…

He is repeatedly stuck in formatting hell. Or…

The books he bought while waiting for his Nook to arrive can’t be opened. Or…

His Nook’s touchscreen is buggy and he has to tap & swipe very gently for it to work. Or…

His Nook’s touchscreen is buggy and he has to tap & swipe very firmly for it to work. Or…

His Nook’s touchscreen is buggy and he has to swipe up & down instead side to side for it to turn pages. Or…

His Nook’s touchscreen is buggy and he can’t get it to turn pages at all. Or…

His Nook’s touchscreen is buggy and he has to tap or swipe two to three times for it to work. Or…

He has discovered that, on the Nook forum, waiting 40 minutes to an hour on the phone before IT can get a problem solved is considered "great IT service." Or…

He bought his Nook expecting to be able to lend his books to all his friends, then discovered he can lend a book one time only, for only two weeks, and then only if the publisher permits it. Or…

His Nook works, but several of its touted features aren’t available yet, but may be at some unspecified date early next year (hopefully).

Or…

Perhaps he posts here because he is sick and tired of being told at the Nook board to suck it up…the Nook is a great ereader…it is wonderful…the best thing since sliced bread…so much better than the Kindle…and that he simply needs to have faith in B&N because surely all its problems can be fixed by a simple software update that will come in late December…Ok, by mid-January…well, by March…so…so…so…hey, stop complaining! The Nook is wonderful! They love it! They’ve never had anything so wonderful. Be patient! We don’t want to hear it! If you don’t like it or have problems and want to discuss them you are a Kindle troll! We…hey…we just disvoered a new problem…anyone have a work around for it…?

Change the font size, that seems to be the answer for everything…

<we have faith…and…patience…>

<yeah, you just need patience…>

<software update…>

<soon…>
