I just got a kindle yesterday for christmas. I dropped it from about 30 inches, and didn’t think too much of it as I drop my cell phone from much higher than that all the time. There was no visible sign of damage, but the screen no longer shows anything but jagged black lines.
Already, I think the Kindle is priced too high compared to what I pay for used books on amazon, and I have no interest in paying so much for a portable device that is so fragile. So although I am excited about the promise of digital ink I would think twice about getting one if you have to carry the device around a lot.

this really sucks! Just recieved a new kindle for christmas and can’t even register it because I live in Montana. No Service for whispernet. Shouldn’t there have been a warning posted to the buyer with the Mt address that service does not cover MT and Alaska????? Any solutions other than returning it?

George, this is a noble effort, and it would be nice if Amazon collected answers to all these and related questions from us international customers and put them right at the page where they sell Kindle to us. However, the answers are known:
- General browsing is not available because Amazon has no agreements with local cellular providers; AT&T data roaming is used instead, and it is expensive. For the same reason newspapers and magazines arrive without illustrations, and blogs are not available. So, we could actually view Wikipedia access as an unexpected extra. Of course, this does not explain *why* didn’t Amazon enter into local agreements.

"Why then, would you want to keep 400, 600, 700 or more books on your Kindle except for bragging rights."
Does it really matter? Like I said, I’m not experiencing these problems but if others are then Amazon should be notified, look into it, and hopefully figure out a solution.
I’m not a huge fan of the "blame the consumer for the problem" mentality. Amazon advertises their Kindle as holding around 1500 books. So if people want to carry 400, 500, or 600 or more on their Kindles they should be able to …. even if they have no other reason than "because I want to."

This has happened in Christmas 2007 and 2008, also after big pushes like the Oprah promotion; there are still some vertrans of those campaigns around here. Please be patient and kind, they may look like dumb questions to you but remember your first few days.
However if we get another "How do I load DVD’s onto my Kindle?", I may not hold back.
